This pee-in-pants laugh riot reads like a season of South Park episodes on Comedy Central.The authors claim that keeping kosher is “the system of Jewish dietary laws that makes the U.S. tax code both simple and reasonable.” Moreover, “The Bible says you’re not supposed to cook an animal in its mother’s milk, because ‘that’s super effed-up.’”Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement. The authors define it as: “The biggest Jewish holiday of the year. If the other Jewish holidays are NBA players, Yom Kippur is LeBron James.” It is also a day of fasting. “Find someone who makes that joke about being allowed to eat McDonald’s on Yom Kippur because it’s ‘fast food’ and beat the [crap] out of him.”“The Bar Mitzvah is a traditional ceremony held when a Jewish boy turns 13, to celebrate the fact that he has become a man in every sense of the word…except having a job.” A Bat Mitzvah is for teen girls and “takes place whenever her parents are able to get her to put down her iPhone.”As for sex, or lack thereof, these witty authors ask: “Why do Jewish women like Chinese food? Because ‘won ton’ spelled backward is ‘not now.’” To distinguish between Talmud and Torah, the former is the oral history of Judaism, passed on for millennia. Torah is the written history, on sacred scrolls. The advantage, say the authors, is that "unlike a rabbi, you can shut up a book." At age 72, Dave Barry is a pubescent juvenile.Particularly, Presbyterian but “Jewish adjacent” Dave Barry brings poignant issues to the foreground through humor. He opines that Jews appear to make for good comedians, comedy writers, and film makers because of persecution and hardships Jews endured for millennia.Mostly, the authors’ definitions and religious interpretations are outright nonsensical. The Three Wise Men—make that Three Wise Guy—authors out-silly each other. Chutzpah is not “a large loogie.” It is flavor 32 at Baskin Robbins. See? Their ribald humor is contagious. For those not familiar with Yiddish, chutzpah means shameless audacity; impudence. Speaking of which...This novel-length subtitled book makes for the perfect gift to place under the Christmas tree.
